Environmentalist Laments Introduction of Electricity

Story on CNSNews.com: Environmentalist Laments Introduction of Electricity

It’s a good article that demonstrates the wide gap between environmentalist wackos and responsible conservationists. The article contrasts Gar Smith, a nut who thinks we shouldn’t give Africans electricity, with Patrick Moore, a founder of Greenpeace who left that organization in the 80s because it is extremist.

Career Choices

Friday, August 23rd, 2002

We got the following email from one of our system administrators this morning:

Subject: snake

I ran across the snake last Friday, and was able to catch it and take it outside. It was up on the raised floor and couldn’t get any traction, so it was easy to catch.

That is so not part of what I expected a “real world” job to include.

Gun Statistics

Friday, August 9th, 2002

I stumbled across a list of gun “facts” at CBSnews.com. It was horribly one-sided, which doesn’t surprise me. Here is an off-the-cuff look at some of the misleading information it gives.

Non-union construction workers used to cut costs on new Teamsters building

Teamsters Union 988 is holding the grand opening this weekend for its new union hall, which is expected to feature Teamster President James P. Hoffa.

But it has become a sour moment for other labor leaders because the Teamsters didn’t use union construction workers. They were told by the Teamsters that union contractors cost too much.

(emphasis added)

That’s just hilarious.

Things that go bump in the night

Friday, August 9th, 2002

One of these days, I’ll hear a strange noise and ignore it and it really will be a burglar. But for now, I’ll just keep driving myself crazy hunting down the sources of unusual noises in my house.

Speed of light slowing down?

CNN.com - Einstein’s theory may be relatively wrong - August 8, 2002

SYDNEY, Australia — The crux of Einstein’s theory of relativity — that E = mc 2 — is under challenge, following evidence that the speed of light might be slowing down.

Creationists have been suggesting this for a while now.

DOJ Ordered to Release Names of Sept. 11 Detainees

Friday, August 2nd, 2002

FOXNews is reporting that a judge has ordered the Department of Justice to release the names of all people detained in the 9/11 investigations.

This is a good thing. The terror investigations have exposed some alarming power that the government has that is entirely inconsistent with a free people.

Don’t get me wrong. I bet most of the people that have been investigated are guilty. And I hope we find all the terrorists, and all those who are plotting terror, and string them up.

But the end does not justify the means. If the government can indefinitely “detain” Abdul, Mohammed, Omar, and Raoul, refuse to divulge that they are even being held, and deny them due process; then the government can do the same thing to Joe, Fred, Bill, and George.

Single-file hat execution

Thursday, August 1st, 2002

Riddle courtesy of William Wu’s riddle archive.

10 prisoners are on death row. Tomorrow they will be arranged in single file, all facing one direction. The guy in the front of the line (he can’t see anything in front of him) will be called the 1st guy, and the guy in the back of the line (he can see the heads of the other nine people) will be called the 10th guy.

An executioner will then put a hat on everyone’s head; the hat will either be black or white, totally random. Prisoners cannot see the color of their own hat.

The executioner then goes to the 10th guy and asks him what color hat he is wearing; the prisoner can respond with either “black” or “white”. If what he says matches the color of the hat he’s wearing, he will live. Else, he dies. The executioner then proceeds to the 9th guy, and asks the same question, then asks the 8th guy … this continues until all of the prisoners have been queried. Assume each prisoner can hear each previous answer.

This is the night before the execution. The prisoners are allowed to get together to discuss a plan for maximizing the number of lives saved tomorrow. What is the optimal plan? How many lives can you save?
